“Prize Came Just in Time,” Minneapolis Star Tribune, May 1, 1965
Minneapolis artist Brad Davis, 2026 Riverside Av., a University of Minnesota student, was down to his last $14.50 when the call for him came at the grocery store next door. "I could hardly believe it at first," said Davis, explaining that his painting, "Intersection," had just won a $500 top prize in the Fourth Minnesota Artists Biennial Exhibition which will open Thursday at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
"The news didn't hit me until I got back my studio, then I actually jumped up in the air and clicked my heels a few times,” Davis said. His pet kitten seemed pleased with the news, too.
Davis said he will use the prize money to buy canvas and paint and "to keep going for a while."
With Davis were four of the other nine winners of $100 Jurors’ Awards. Other winners, not pictured were John C. Williams, Guy Benson, Zigmunds Priede and Prentice Gary, all of Minneapolis.
The exhibition can be seen at the Institute through June 27. Forty two works of art from 1,271 entries were selected for the show.
